SPLIT NAILS AND GNAWED NAILS … OUCH!

Split nails and gnawed nails

This series deals with many common and very painful conditions, which can spoil the appearance of your nails. But for you, nail technicians, this is not a problem!

1. SPLIT NAILS

What is it about ?

Nails are composed of several layers, which normally form a beautiful set, but the horny upper layer may begin to detach. The nails seem to fray. ‘

Prevention?

‘The main cause of split nails is drying out, which may be due to vitamin deficiency, but it is usually not necessary to go so far. Most often, corrosive cleaning agents or acetone remover are responsible for them. Frequent contact with water is also harmful. To have strong nails, you need a good balance between water and grease in the nail channels. If your nails are too often in the water, this balance is broken, the nails are weakened and split. Another tip, never remove your nail polish or artificial nails without precautions: you risk damaging the stratum corneum, unless you have applied the specially developed Sopolish Protect & Peel system to your nails . ‘

Remedy?

‘Use a serum or nail cream to strengthen them. Our ProNails Nail Serum contains keratin, for example, one of the building blocks of the nails that immediately strengthens them, and panthenol, a substance that penetrates deep into the nail plate and hydrates the nail from the inside.

2. BREAKS OR CRACKS

What is it about ?

Like split nails, nails that break or crack easily are often dry. It is therefore not useless to acquire a serum for the nails if you suffer a lot. In addition, a bad filing technique can damage the nails.

Prevention?

‘If you file your nails into a point, the breaking point will quickly become too stressed, increasing the risk of cracks or breaks. Do not file them too obliquely. Also be sure to file in the same direction. The image moving back and forth weakens the nails. Is it better to cut them? No, cutting a nail briefly compresses its different layers, before releasing them suddenly, which makes them lose their natural shape and weakens them. The toenails are a little stronger and therefore support it better. ‘

Remedy?

‘A cracked nail can be re-glued, but it’s better not to do it yourself: nail glues are very aggressive products, they harden instantly, like super glu (cyanoacrylate). It is not easy to get a good result. If the glue loosens or dissolves, a notch forms in the nail, an ideal refuge for moisture and bacteria. You risk a fungal infection or inflammation. Instead, call in a professional or cleanly file the broken nail to prevent further damage. ‘

3. ONYCHOPHAGIA

What is it about ?

“Children are not the only ones biting fingernails and cravings around, many adults do it too.”

Prevention?

‘You can only lose that bad habit by never starting, I’m afraid,’ laughs the nail specialist. ‘If you’ve started, never forget that gnawed nails are really not beautiful. You definitely prefer to look neat, right? Remember when the urge begins to itch. A psychological approach seems to me better than nail polish with an unpleasant taste, effective for some people, but those who bite their nails really much will nibble it anyway. The same is true of gel nails or semi-permanent. Besides, a nice manicure can be an extra motivation to not put your fingers in your mouth. ‘

Remedy?

If you bite your fingernails, you may also damage the cuticles and the surrounding skin. Carefully treat any injuries to prevent infection. File the gnawed nails as often as possible to give them a cleaner appearance and eliminate the urge to gnaw the pieces that exceed. Be careful never to file or gnaw too short, to avoid infection and ingrown toenails. ‘
